TNB manager fined RM30,000 for false claims

A TNB subsidiary manager was fined RM30,000 by the Sessions Court for submitting false lodging and subsistence allowance claims totalling RM1,855.

KUALA LUMPUR: A manager at a Tenaga Nasional Berhad subsidiary has been fined RM30,000 for submitting false claims.

Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad found Norhayati Hamzah, 54, guilty of an alternative charge under Section 471 of the Penal Code.

The charge related to using four forged documents to claim RM1,855 in lodging and subsistence allowances between December 2019 and February 2020.

The false claims were submitted to the company’s Audit and Compliance Department Manager at the TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd office in Bangsar.

The offence is punishable under Section 465 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both.

Judge Rosli ordered Norhayati to pay the RM30,000 fine or face six months in jail.

The court allowed a postponement of the fine payment pending an appeal to the High Court.

Norhayati’s bail was increased from RM8,000 to RM10,000 with one surety as a condition for the stay.

She was also ordered to surrender her passport to the court and is blacklisted from travelling overseas.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission prosecutor Mohd Aliff Shaharuzaman had requested a severe sentence, citing the offence’s seriousness.

Defence lawyer S. Preakas requested a fine, noting it was his client’s first offence and that she has six children.

The trial, which began in 2022, involved testimony from 17 prosecution witnesses and two defence witnesses.
