CCTV coverage in Kelantan private premises still lacking, police say

Kelantan police report low CCTV installation in private and business premises, with over 200 break-ins at locations without cameras this year

KOTA BHARU: The installation of closed-circuit television cameras in Kelantan remains inadequate, particularly at private and business premises.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said a study revealed significant gaps in CCTV coverage despite its proven role in crime prevention.

The study identified CCTV at 67 health premises, 145 educational institutions, and 180 government administrative offices.

For private premises, 241 health facilities, 266 educational institutions, and 577 business premises had the facility.

Mohd Yusoff noted that 302 mosques had CCTV, exceeding the number in business premises and indicating an imbalance in security needs.

From January to November, police recorded 1,457 housebreaking cases.

Only 37 of those cases involved premises with CCTV, while more than 200 occurred at locations without the facility.

“For business premises, the number of cases is almost balanced between those with and without CCTV,” he said.

He added that most government premises have now been equipped with CCTV.

Mohd Yusoff confirmed a separate investigation into a police officer suspected of molesting a woman.

The officer from a Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department is being probed under Section 345 of the Penal Code.

“The police officer is in his 30s while the victim is in his 20s,” he said.

The victim is the wife of a detainee, and the alleged incident occurred in Pasir Mas last Wednesday. – Bernama
