Kelantan commercial crime cases double but financial losses fall

Kelantan police report a 100% rise in commercial crime cases to 2,016, though total financial losses dropped to RM43.6 million from RM52.5 million

KOTA BHARU: Commercial crime cases in Kelantan more than doubled in the first 11 months of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said cases rose to 2,016 from 1,014, an increase of 1,002 incidents.

He noted a positive development as the total financial losses decreased from RM52.5 million to RM43.6 million.

“The decrease in the value of the losses reflects the effectiveness of enforcement measures, early interventions, and public awareness efforts,” he said.

E-commerce fraud cases surged from 193 to 519, with losses rising to RM3.22 million from RM1.68 million.

Other cybercrimes also increased from 224 to 516 cases, with losses doubling to RM8.47 million.

Online part-time job scams saw the most significant surge, jumping from 74 to 245 cases.

Losses from this scam category skyrocketed to RM7.52 million from RM1.57 million.

Mohd Yusoff said this trend reflects criminals’ increasingly sophisticated modus operandi in the digital space.

“The police will continue to strengthen prevention strategies and intensify intelligence gathering,” he stated.

He added that police will expand inter-agency cooperation and increase public awareness campaigns.

Separately, Mohd Yusoff highlighted ongoing efforts to prevent extremism and violence through the LEARN Project.

This initiative involves lectures and engagement at the school level by liaison officers.

Programmes are being conducted at several schools including SMK Dato’ Ahmad Maher in Kota Bharu.

“Kelantan is not immune to the threat of extremism and the influence of violent thinking through digital platforms,” he warned.

The project is a collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Bukit Aman’s Counter-Terrorism Division. – Bernama
