Police hunt detainee who escaped from Sungai Bakap Hospital

A remand detainee escaped from Sungai Bakap Hospital while receiving treatment. Police have launched an operation to track him down.

NIBONG TEBAL: Police have launched an operation to track down a detainee who escaped from Sungai Bakap Hospital last Friday.

Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the suspect, S. Clemont, 47, was discovered missing at about 3.45 pm.

He was last seen wearing a blue-and-white hospital gown.

A report on the incident was lodged by the personnel assigned to guard the suspect.

The suspect was remanded for a case under Sections 457 and 379A of the Penal Code involving housebreaking and motorcycle theft.

He was taken to the hospital on Jan 22 for treatment after suffering a seizure.

Police are actively tracking down the suspect and investigating the case under Section 223 and 224 of the Penal Code.

Section 223 pertains to negligence by a public servant causing an escape from lawful custody.

Section 224 relates to the offence of escaping from lawful detention.

The public with information is urged to contact the investigating officer, ASP Cheok Kian Soon, at 012-619 3878.

They can also contact the Seberang Perai Selatan district police headquarters or visit the nearest police station.
