Selangor foils major diesel smuggling attempt, seizes 3,400 litres

Selangor authorities seized 3,400 litres of subsidised diesel and arrested a driver in Klang, preventing an estimated RM20,000 in subsidy leakage.

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor branch of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has foiled a major attempt to misappropriate subsidised diesel.

Enforcement officers seized approximately 3,400 litres of the fuel during an early morning patrol in the Pandamaran area of Klang.

State chief enforcement officer Mohd Hanizam Kechek said the success resulted from continuous monitoring by seven KPDN Selangor offices. He stated the operation ensures subsidised fuel reaches its intended targets transparently.

“At around 1 am, patrol officers spotted a bonded lorry parked suspiciously,” he said in a statement. Inspections revealed six intermediate bulk containers, each with a 1,000-litre capacity, containing suspected subsidised diesel.

The lorry had been modified with connecting hoses and a meter pump. Hanizam said the male driver, in his 20s, attempted to flee but was apprehended by swift-acting officers.

The driver could not produce valid documentation for possessing and transporting the scheduled fuel. Initial investigations suggest he filled up at several nearby petrol stations, based on purchase receipts found on him.

“The estimated amount of diesel is approximately 3,400 litres, with a total seizure value exceeding RM100,000,” Hanizam added. He confirmed the operation successfully prevented an estimated RM20,000 in national subsidy leakage.

The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and its related regulations. Hanizam added that there is a possibility of other parties being implicated as well.

“We will not compromise with any party that violates the law, and investigations will be extended to include the petrol station premises involved,” he warned. He outlined severe penalties for those convicted under the act.

An individual may face a fine of up to RM1 million, or imprisonment of up to three years, or both. A company may be fined up to RM2 million for a first offence.

Meanwhile, KPDN Selangor affirmed its commitment to tightening enforcement. This includes considering action against the misuse of facilities under the Subsidised Diesel Control System (SKDS).

The ministry urges the public to channel information regarding such activities through its official channels.
