ECRL on track for January 2027 launch, says minister

Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirms the East Coast Rail Link is targeted to start operations in January 2027, with system integration testing as the critical next phase.

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Transport is maintaining its target to commence operations of the East Coast Rail Link in January 2027.

Minister Anthony Loke said operational readiness, not just track construction, is the most critical factor before services can start. He emphasised that system integration must come first, and testing has not yet begun.

“Rail systems are not just about the tracks,” Loke told a press conference after delivering his 2026 New Year Address. He cited past operational challenges with the KLIA aerotrain and LRT3 as lessons learned.

Loke said system integration testing is the most demanding phase of rail projects. This process ensures all components function reliably and in sync before full operations begin.

“MOT will continue to monitor the project and ensure all technical requirements are met to guarantee the safety, reliability and smooth operation of the ECRL,” he said.

According to earlier reports, the ECRL project had achieved 89% overall completion as of October 2025. The rail link spans Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Selangor.
