Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim calls for education reforms to meet global standards and address digital transformation challenges while maintaining inclusivity.
NAIROBI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a systemic overhaul of Malaysia’s education system to keep pace with the rapidly evolving global landscape.
Speaking at the Malaysia-Africa Higher Education Forum 2025, Anwar emphasised the need for an education system that meets global standards while remaining inclusive.
“We need a systemic overhaul that is more inclusive and open to the dynamics of knowledge attainment,” he said during his official visit to Nairobi.
Quoting celebrated Kenyan novelist Ngugi wa Thiong’o, Anwar stated that educational systems allowing only one way of knowing become “systems of domination.”
He highlighted the shared histories between Malaysia and Africa, shaped by struggle and resilience against colonial domination.
Anwar stressed that independence must be accompanied by intellectual transformation matched with equity.
He described education as “the great equaliser” that must uplift all members of society.
The Prime Minister acknowledged emerging challenges including difficulties in financing higher education.
He also noted the need for robust quality assurance mechanisms meeting international standards.
Pressure to keep digital transformation inclusive and meaningful presents another significant challenge.
Despite these hurdles, Anwar pointed to immense opportunities for Asia and Africa.
He highlighted that both regions are home to the world’s youngest populations.
“Our economies are growing, and our future prosperity depends on talent, innovation, and knowledge,” Anwar concluded.
