Former Bernama sub-editor Teoh Hock Siew dies at 75

Teoh Hock Siew, a former English sub-editor at Bernama, passes away at 75, remembered for his dedication and unique Penang personality.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former English sub-editor of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Teoh Hock Siew passed away yesterday at the age of 75.

The news of his passing was shared by the former New Straits Times Press group managing editor Mustapha Kamil Mohd Janor in a Facebook post today.

Teoh was a sub-editor with Bernama Economics Service for more than five years.

Former Bernama chief executive officer and editor-in-chief Datuk Yong Soo Heong described Teoh as “an interesting guy from Penang” who brought his unique personality into the newsroom.

“We were in the same Red Crescent squad after school. He later surfaced at Business Times and then at Bernama’s Economic Service, where he got the editing jobs done without much fuss, even in a bilingual setup,” he said, adding that Teoh’s “Penang ways” would be missed.

Meanwhile, Mustapha Kamil said Teoh was already part of the Business Times’ sub-editors’ desk when he first joined the organisation.

“Together with another sub-editor, Teh Poh Chee, they stayed with Business Times for a long while and formed the backbone of the newspaper’s gatekeeping team,” he said.

Teoh was a long-serving sub-editor at Business Times before joining Bernama, where he was regarded as a dedicated member of the editorial team and played a key role in upholding the newspaper’s standards.

His funeral wake will be held at Nirvana Centre Kuala Lumpur from April 27-28, while cremation will be held at Nirvana Crematorium, Shah Alam, on April 29.
