Indonesian plantation worker killed in crocodile attack in Niah

MIRI: An Indonesian oil palm plantation worker died after being attacked by a crocodile while collecting water at a riverbank near Tanjung Payung Suai Estate in Niah today.

The incident occurred along the Miri-Bintulu Coastal Road.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre received an emergency call about the attack at 11.34 am.

A team from the Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station was immediately dispatched to the scene located about 44 kilometres away.

The rescue team arrived at the location at 12.19 pm under the leadership of station chief PBT II Rary Binjie.

They immediately launched a search operation covering a 700 metre radius area both upstream and downstream of the river.

Eyewitnesses reported that the victim Muhlis Tentra aged 47 was with two co-workers collecting water for pesticide tanks when the crocodile attacked.

The crocodile pulled him underwater during the attack.

The victim’s body was found at 4.40 pm approximately 500 metres from the original attack site.

The body was subsequently handed over to the police for further action. – Bernama
