Kapit to transform into modern inland town within a decade

Sarawak Premier announces RM1.96 billion development plan for Kapit, including water supply, roads and eco-tourism initiatives over next 5-10 years.

KAPIT: The Sarawak government’s rapid development initiatives are expected to transform Kapit into a modern inland town within the next five to 10 years.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the comprehensive development plan covers water and electricity supply, road construction, resettlement, and socioeconomic development.

“Kapit will become a ‘New Inland Modern Township’ in five to 10 years,” he said at the Merarau ceremony with the Kapit community.

The state government has approved RM1.96 billion to supply treated water to Kapit, with additional funding for a new electricity supply system using advanced technology.

Several main road networks and feeder roads will be constructed and upgraded, including the Belaga-Bakun access road project and jetties to support economic development.

The RM122 million Jalan Merirai project and seven-kilometre Jalan Tunoh will connect resettlement areas in the region.

“Development of basic infrastructure is crucial to improve the well-being of rural residents before we move to the next phase,” Abang Johari said.

He noted Sarawak has been recognised as a high-income state seven years ahead of the World Bank target but efforts to increase household income must continue.

The state government will provide free higher education for eligible Sarawakians starting next year to strengthen human capital development.

Abang Johari expressed his aspiration to make Kapit a pedestrian-friendly and eco-tourism city based on recommendations from Norwegian planning experts.

“With meticulous planning and its own identity, Kapit has the potential to become one of the best eco-friendly cities in the world,” he said.

He also appreciated local leadership, veterans, government agencies and the Kapit community for supporting the state’s development agenda.

On another matter, Abang Johari said his conferment of The Order of the Rising Sun by Japan’s Emperor proves global recognition of Sarawak’s progress.

“The world is beginning to recognise us – our development and our approach, especially in building a new economy based on renewable energy and sustainability,” he said.

He will leave for Japan next Monday to receive the prestigious award. – Bernama
