KPKT to continue engagement to improve Urban Renewal Bill

The Urban Renewal Bill is withdrawn for more stakeholder input to improve rights for original owners and urban quality of life.

PUTRAJAYA: The Housing and Local Government Ministry will continue engagement sessions to improve the Urban Renewal Bill.

Minister Nga Kor Ming said the ministry will discuss with local residents, academics, elected representatives and industry experts to ensure every view is considered in the drafting process.

He stated the bill aims to raise the quality of life in neglected urban areas and rejuvenate local socio-economies.

“The ministry will continue to study every feedback received and improve the bill to ensure the rights of original owners in a more comprehensive manner,” Nga said in a statement.

This follows the Cabinet’s decision to retract the bill for further refinement.

Nga added the bill will be tabled in an improved format after the process is finalised.

“KPKT remains committed to ensuring the Urban Renewal Act that will be tabled supports an urban renewal agenda that is safer, better planned, sustainable and liveable,” he said.

MADANI Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the Cabinet agreed in principle on the need to improve the bill.

He said this will allow housing issues in urban areas, especially those involving the urban poor, to be overcome fairly.

The bill’s second reading was tabled on Aug 28 but was postponed to the next session without debate. – Bernama
