Malaysia strengthens its commitment to children’s rights at the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child session, highlighting policy and legal reforms.
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has intensified its efforts to protect children’s rights at the international level through policy and legislative measures.
The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) reaffirmed this commitment at the 100th Session of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in Geneva.
Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the dialogue reflected the government’s determination to strengthen the global child protection agenda.
Key government measures include establishing the Department of Child Development and implementing legal reforms.
“This effort aims to ensure that every child in Malaysia receives comprehensive protection,” Shukri said in a statement.
She described Malaysia’s participation as a historic achievement, being its first since 2007 and the first led by a minister.
“It reflects an elevated level of the government’s political commitment,” she added.
The CRC Committee commended Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen child protection and welfare.
It also submitted several proposals for improvement for Malaysia’s consideration and implementation.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child is a key UN human rights instrument with 54 articles.
As a state party, Malaysia is obliged to submit periodic reports on the progress of children’s rights.
The dialogue session was held on Jan 22 and 23, with a Malaysian delegation led by KPWKM.
