Litterbugs in Malaysia face fines up to RM2,000 and community service from Jan 1, as minister calls urban cleanliness a shared responsibility.
KUALA LUMPUR: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has stressed that urban cleanliness is a joint responsibility, not solely a government duty.
He expressed disappointment that littering persists, especially in city centres and public areas.
“Malaysia is progressing towards being a developed country and will hold Visit Malaysia 2026, but irresponsible attitudes like this tarnish a city’s image,” he said.
His ministry, through SWCorp and local authorities, is committed to cleaning and enforcement, but success depends on public awareness.
Stiffer action will be imposed on public litterers from January 1 next year, including fines of up to RM2,000.
“Besides fines, additional penalties such as community service of a maximum of 12 hours in six months can be imposed,” Nga added.
He said this approach aims to educate the public to be more disciplined and responsible.
Nga urged all parties to respect public areas during festivities by using garbage cans and obeying the law.
“Clean cities reflect a cultured society,” he stated.
He called for support for SWCorp and local authorities to ensure cities are cleaner and sustainable for future generations.
