Malaysian police security praised as equal to US agencies

Home Minister says PDRM’s security management for ASEAN Summit, including protection of US President Trump, matches global standards.

PUTRAJAYA: The capability of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in managing security for high-profile international events has been recognised as being on par with leading global security agencies, including those in the United States (US).

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said this was demonstrated during the recent ASEAN Summit, where PDRM displayed exceptional efficiency and professionalism in handling the presence of high-risk leaders, including US President Donald Trump.

“PDRM has proven its competence to be on par with foreign security agencies. In the context of receiving President Trump, who is categorised as a high-risk delegation, the cooperation between PDRM and the US advance team was very close and effective.

“They (the US security team) placed their trust in us. Although they have their own standard security procedures, PDRM remained the final authority in deciding all security aspects,” he said during an exclusive interview with Bernama led by its Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj here.

He said meticulous preparations began with the development of a detailed checklist and comprehensive discussions with the security forces of participating countries, including the US Secret Service.

“As a result, all PDRM security strategies, including proposed protocol routes, road closure schedules, and the deployment of security assets,  were well received by the US President’s security team, signifying their recognition of PDRM’s expertise,” he said.

Saifuddin Nasution said President Trump himself commended the Malaysian security arrangements, expressing that he felt safe and at ease throughout his stay in Malaysia.

“President Trump personally mentioned three key points, among them that he felt safe and calm during his entire visit due to the capabilities of Malaysia’s security forces.

“This is a very meaningful recognition and should serve as a source of pride for all PDRM members,” he said, adding that the successful organisation of the summit further strengthened Malaysia’s international reputation as a capable host of large-scale events that demand top-tier security management.

The 47th ASEAN Summit, which concluded on Oct 29, brought together the top leaders of 10 member countries, as well as dialogue partners, including the US, China, Japan, and India, reaffirming ASEAN’s role as a key platform for dialogue and cooperation in an increasingly dynamic global environment. – Bernama
