Malaysia’s joint forces command gets new leader

Lieutenant-General Tengku Muhammad Fauzi takes over as Commander of the Armed Forces Joint Forces, succeeding Zahani Zainal Abidin who now heads MiDAS.

KUALA LUMPUR: Lieutenant-General Datuk Tengku Muhammad Fauzi Tengku Ibrahim is the new Commander of the Armed Forces Joint Forces (PAB).

He took over from Lieutenant-General Datuk Zahani Zainal Abidin at a handover ceremony at Wisma Pertahanan. Zahani has been appointed chief executive of the Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security (MiDAS), effective January 1.

Chief of Defence Force General Datuk Malek Razak Sulaiman witnessed the ceremony. Service commanders and senior officers of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) were also in attendance.

The appointment followed a recommendation from the 632nd Armed Forces Council Meeting on January 7. It subsequently received the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on January 18.

The PAB is responsible for coordinating operations and exercises at national and international levels across all three MAF branches.

Tengku Muhammad Fauzi was formerly the deputy Army chief. He began his military career in 1988 at the Royal Military College.

He was commissioned as an officer in the Royal Malay Regiment on June 6, 1990. His nearly four-decade career includes commanding the 1st Battalion of the RAMD and the 10th Brigade (Para).

He also served as commander of the 3rd Division, commander of Army Training and Doctrine, and commander of the Army Western Field.

His experience includes international peacekeeping missions, such as NATO deployments in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He has also participated in various exercises with foreign armed forces.

He served as an instructor at the Royal Military College in Duntroon, Australia. Professionally, he attended courses at the United States Army Command and General Staff College and the Indonesian National Army Staff and Command School.

He is also an alumnus of the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom and Harvard Business School.
