Melaka to build dedicated rest stops for gig riders statewide

Melaka plans rider pit stops in every district and new p-hailing pickup points to support over 5,000 gig workers, with RM50,000 in Ramadan aid.

MELAKA: The state government plans to establish at least one dedicated rest centre for gig workers in each district. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the initiative aims to enhance welfare for a community exceeding 5,000 people.

These facilities, known as Rider Pitstops, will be located in strategic areas. They will provide spaces for riders to rest and wait for orders comfortably and safely.

Ab Rauf announced the plan at the ‘Majlis Moreh Bersama Rider Dan Penggiat Gig’ event in Ayer Keroh. He emphasised the government’s commitment to caring for the people.

The state will also introduce four new passenger pickup locations for p-hailing services. These will be at Melaka Sentral, Pantai Klebang, Hospital Melaka and EON Bandaraya Melaka.

Furthermore, the government remains open to applications and feedback from gig workers. All matters will be coordinated at the state level before being escalated federally.

As a token of appreciation, RM50,000 in Ramadan contributions will be distributed to the p-hailing and gig worker community. This acknowledges their role in the state’s economy.

Earlier, Ab Rauf presented a RM30,000 state contribution to the Melaka State Education Trust Fund. The aid was for 12 students from various higher learning institutions during a buka puasa event.

This support is part of the state’s commitment to student development. It aims to help student associations run beneficial programmes for their members.
