Authorities investigate viral Quran desecration incident; MCMC, police act under existing laws.
PETALING JAYA : Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir has urged the public to remain calm following the viral incident involving a Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) student allegedly desecrating the Quran.
Zambry said the matter is being handled seriously and according to due process.
“The police have already acted promptly, and the case is currently being investigated. We must ensure the incident is not manipulated to inflame tensions further,” he reportedly said at Parliament.

He stressed that the government will not compromise on actions that disrespect religion, especially during Ramadan, and confirmed that UMPSA had lodged a police report immediately following the incident.
Separately, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil condemned the act, describing it as “rude, insulting to Islam and a challenge to community harmony.”
He said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been instructed to investigate under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, in coordination with the police.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman confirmed the arrest of the student in Kuantan, with investigations ongoing under Section 295 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
UMPSA said it has launched an internal probe and will not tolerate actions that disrupt social harmony.
