National-level Malaysian Special Olympics Games will be held in Sarawak, full-scale, despite escalating costs

Special Olympics Malaysia 2026 in Bintulu to proceed at full scale despite rising costs and travel challenges

KUCHING: The 6th Special Olympics National Games Malaysia will proceed at full scale in Bintulu from tomorrow, April 24 to 26, despite the challenge of escalating airfares and logistical expenses.

The Sarawak state government and the national-level organisers confirmed today that there will be no reduction in the number of events or participants.

State Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah emphasised that the integrity of the Games remains the priority.

“The Special Olympics Games 2026 in Bintulu will be carried out at full scale.

“More than 700 athletes from 11 states across the country, as well as the Federal Territories, are set to participate.

“We will not cut down any events despite the escalating costs we are currently facing,” she reportedly said.

In a statement issued by the State Public Communications Unit (UKAS), Fatimah assured that all logistical arrangements for the Games in Bintulu have been successfully finalised.

She said that accommodation for the athletes competing across eight sporting events, along with their respective team officials, is fully secured.

Arrangements for catering and local transportation are also in place to ensure the smooth running of the competition.

This marks the first time Sarawak has played host to these national-level Games for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

The choice of Bintulu as the host city is significant; known as the “gas capital” of Sarawak, it serves as a high-tech industrial hub housing major oil, gas, and engineering projects.

The Games serve not only as a sporting competition but as a vital platform for community development and the empowerment of “special” sportsmen and sportswomen across Malaysia.
