Parents and community key to tackling school bullying, says ministry

The Education Ministry says curbing school bullying requires strong cooperation from parents, the community and police, alongside existing school guidelines.

LABUAN: The issue of bullying among students can be effectively addressed through close cooperation between parents, schools and the wider community.

Ministry of Education secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim said existing ministry guidelines provide a structured approach for schools to tackle bullying.

He stressed these efforts would only be effective with strong support from families and the community.

“We need parents and the community to play a role in tackling this issue,” he told reporters after presenting the Early Schooling Aid here.

Aminuddin said the values of friendship and mutual care among students must be strengthened as a preventive measure.

He urged students who witness bullying to report it to school authorities for early intervention.

“The culture of caring and courage to speak up must be nurtured,” he said.

“Reporting is not about punishment, but about protecting everyone’s safety and well-being.”

Aminuddin said cooperation with the police should also be enhanced to ensure a safe environment.

He noted the presence of law enforcement officers in and around school compounds plays an important role.

“The presence of the police helps create a sense of security,” he added.

The ministry continues to strengthen counselling services and student support systems in schools.

This includes collaboration with parent-teacher associations, local leaders and community organisations.
