Penang plans 122 extension projects for 2026 development

Penang Chief Minister announces 122 extension projects for 2026, focusing on infrastructure, transport, and high-value industries to drive economic growth.

GEORGE TOWN: A total of 122 extension projects are planned for implementation in Penang in 2026. These projects will cover public infrastructure, community facilities and special economic initiatives.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow called for integrated mobilisation of all state and federal implementing departments. He emphasised a shared responsibility to ensure effective delivery of high-impact projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan.

“As a rapidly developing state, the need for modern infrastructure and an efficient public transport system is increasingly urgent,” Chow said in his New Year 2026 message. He stated that good mobility would boost productivity, competitiveness and quality of life.

Key projects he highlighted include the Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Expressway and the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit. The completion of the Penang International Airport expansion project was also noted as a priority.

To strengthen high-value industries, strategic projects like the Penang IC Design and Digital Park are set to proceed. The Penang Chip Design Academy and Silicon Research and Incubation Space are expected to create high-income jobs and attract global tech investment.

Chow added that Penang’s mature industrial, service and tourism sectors provide a strong base. He said the state can strengthen the people’s economy by supporting micro, small and medium enterprises, local entrepreneurship and skilled jobs.

Initiatives in upskilling, gig worker support and community empowerment will ensure growth benefits households directly. Chow stated this approach balances large investments with local community impact.

He said growth can be driven through a green economy, creative industries and digital technology. This prioritises a balance between economic growth, social justice and environmental sustainability.

“Penang can build an economy that is not only globally competitive, but also ensures that every family lives with dignity, safety and prosperity by 2030,” he said. His vision is for inclusive progress where no one is left behind.

In his final term, Chow expressed gratitude and pride in the state’s ongoing progress. He noted Penang’s strength lies in its strategic location, heritage, and the spirit of its people.

The state government remains committed to the Penang 2030 Vision for a smart and green, family-centred state. This direction aligns with the national MADANI Malaysia framework for balanced and comprehensive development.
