A 97-year-old man was found burnt to death after a fire destroyed his home in Sarikei, with four family members managing to escape safely

SIBU: A 97-year-old man was found burnt to death in his bedroom after a fire completely destroyed a house at Jalan Minah, Sarikei early this morning.

Sarikei Fire and Rescue Station chief Arrahman Chik said Teng King Kai, the father of the house owner, was discovered under debris at 2.18am.

Firefighters received an emergency call about the incident at 12.33am, with operations involving 16 personnel from Sarikei and Bintangor Fire and Rescue Stations.

“Six individuals lived in the residence but only five were home during the incident, with four managing to escape safely,” he said in a statement today.

Arrahman said the survivors included the 72-year-old house owner and his 49-year-old wife, a 51-year-old man, and a 12-year-old girl who were all family members.

The fire also destroyed a storage shed along with a Perodua Aruz and Toyota Unser vehicles.

He said firefighters faced challenges including low water pressure, poor lighting, and fire risks from accumulated electrical equipment during firefighting operations, which ended at 4.55am. – Bernama
