HELP University launches safety audits and appoints independent consultants after a fatal explosion at its Bukit Damansara campus, with classes moved online
KUALA LUMPUR: HELP University has conducted comprehensive safety checks across its campuses and appointed independent consultants following a fatal incident at its Bukit Damansara campus.
The university stated it is providing full cooperation to police and the Fire and Rescue Department as they investigate the cause of the Jan 12 explosion.
“HELP University remains highly committed to uncovering the cause of the tragic incident,” the institution said.
It noted that initial indications suggest the explosion originated in a compressor room for the building’s centralised air-conditioning system.
The university clarified that the air-conditioning system is managed by building owner Amanahraya REIT, not by the university directly.
HELP University has also engaged independent forensic consultant Forensic Services Malaysia to help identify the cause.
“This forensic investigation is commissioned as part of the university’s standard operating procedures,” it stated.
The results of all investigations will be shared with students, staff and stakeholders upon completion.
Safety checks on air-conditioning systems in all unaffected buildings at its Bukit Damansara and Subang Bestari campuses were completed on Jan 13.
These inspections confirmed the systems are safe for operations.
For the affected building, Amanahraya REIT has appointed independent engineering consultant CHT International to conduct a comprehensive risk and safety assessment.
The building will remain closed until certified safe, with all classes at the campus currently conducted online.
Although the Subang Bestari campus was unaffected, CHT International will also carry out a precautionary assessment of its mechanical and electrical systems.
HELP University reiterated that the safety, health and wellbeing of its students and staff remain its top priority.
