Four Kedah districts record level 2 heatwave, prompting school closures and alert status across northern Malaysia as temperatures soar.

KOTA SETAR: Four districts in Kedah are experiencing a Level 2 heatwave as of this morning. The affected areas are Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Pendang and Baling.

A Level 2 heatwave is declared when daily maximum temperatures range between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) provided the updated data.

Several other areas in Kedah are under a Level 1 hot weather alert. These include Bandar Baharu, Kulim, Kuala Muda, Pulau Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Pendang and Sik.

The Level 1 alert status, for temperatures between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius, also covers the entire state of Perlis. It extends to North Seberang Perai in Penang and the Perak districts of Kinta, Kuala Kangsar and Hulu Perak.

In response to the prolonged heat, the Kedah State Education Department has closed schools in two districts. Schools in Kota Setar and Pendang will implement Home-Based Teaching and Learning (PdPR) for three days starting today.

The closure decision was based on a MetMalaysia report confirming Level 2 temperatures were recorded for three consecutive days from March 26 to 28. The department’s data forms the basis for the official heatwave declarations across the region.
