Kedah opposition slams stalled water plant upgrade

The Kedah opposition criticises the halted Bukit Selambau water plant upgrade, affecting 15,000 users and calling for a new contractor and better planning.

ALOR SETAR: The Kedah State Assembly opposition has expressed disappointment over the stalled upgrading project at the Bukit Selambau Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which was halted after the contractor failed to complete works despite being granted four extensions of time.

Opposition leader Bau Wong Bau Ek said the situation has directly affected approximately 15,000 consumers across Sungai Petani, Sungai Lalang, Merbok and Tanjung Dawai.

He urged the state government to appoint a more competent contractor to complete the project promptly and ensure a stable water supply in the affected areas.

“The government must also expedite ongoing WTP upgrading projects to enhance the state’s water reserve capacity in preparation for future dry seasons,” he said when debating the motion of thanks for the Kedah Sultan’s royal address.

He added that strategic measures must be prioritised to ensure clean water supply stability, especially amid rapid housing development which requires holistic water resource planning to avoid low pressure or disruptions.

Bau Wong, who is also the Sidam State Assemblyman, said coordination between developers and Syarikat Air Darul Aman Sdn Bhd (SADA) is critical as Kedah is currently upgrading several major WTPs.

He stressed that water supply and road infrastructure are key pillars in the development of new housing areas, particularly in a rapidly developing state like Kedah.

“An imbalance between population growth and existing infrastructure capacity can affect quality of life and property values,” he said.

On the hot weather affecting padi crops, he said water rationing schedules should be implemented to ensure fair distribution and prevent wastage in downstream areas.

He also urged the Department of Environment to tighten enforcement under Section 29A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, including imposing compounds and legal action against those involved in open burning.
