Sultan Ibrahim urges respect for state rights, warns MPs against inflaming tensions between regions

PETALING JAYA: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, (pic) called on lawmakers to return to the original intent of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), emphasising unity, mutual respect, and cooperation between the states and the Federal Government.

In his Royal Address at the opening of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament, the king said Malaysia was founded through MA63, which united Malaya, Sabah, and Sarawak as one nation.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong cautioned Members of Parliament against actions or rhetoric that could inflame regional tensions, stressing that differences of opinion must be handled maturely.

“Honourable Members must be more cautious so as not to incite tensions between regions.

Any differences of opinion must be resolved maturely and not through hatred or suspicion.

“In truth, the rights of the states must always be respected.

However, the collective interest of Malaysia must always take precedence.”

The King also reminded lawmakers that every debate, decision, and vote in Parliament would shape the nation’s future, and should not be treated merely as party political positioning.
