Defence Ministry prepared to help Thailand with southern floods, with 4,000 Malaysians affected but all reported safe in Hatyai area
TAWAU: The Defence Ministry stands ready to assist Thailand in managing flood disasters affecting its southern region if assistance is requested.
Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin expressed confidence that Thailand possesses sufficient capacity to handle flood crises effectively, similar to Malaysia’s approach.
“We do not immediately seek assistance from other countries, but if there’s a need, particularly concerning the Hatyai floods, we will discuss the matter,” he told reporters.
Mohamed Khaled emphasised that Malaysia cannot intervene without proper prior coordination with Thai authorities.
He spoke after officiating the Malaysian Armed Forces Family Day Carnival at Kubota Camp in Tawau.
Media reports indicate approximately 4,000 Malaysians in Hatyai and surrounding areas have been affected by the flooding.
All affected Malaysians have been reported safe despite the challenging conditions.
The Foreign Ministry earlier issued advisories for Malaysians in flood-affected areas to remain indoors when possible.
Malaysians were also urged to follow guidance from local authorities and exercise caution in flooded zones.
The ministry further encouraged unregistered Malaysians to register with Malaysia’s Consulate General in Songkhla or Embassy in Bangkok. – Bernama
