Malaysian border agency seizes RM82.1 million in first year

Malaysia’s Border Control and Protection Agency impresses with RM82.1 million in seizures, earning full ministerial support for legislative and tech upgrades.

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is performing strongly in safeguarding national border security and sovereignty.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the new agency made an impressive start with seizures worth nearly RM82.1 million from operations last year.

He said the Home Ministry is giving full support, including reviewing and amending relevant legislation to ensure smoother border operations.

“I, together with the ministry’s secretary-general, will improve the AKPS Act if amendments are needed, and we will expedite them,” he told a press conference.

Saifuddin said it is crucial for AKPS to be equipped with advanced entry-point control technology.

The agency has also been instructed to study best practices of foreign border agencies like the Australian Border Force for possible adoption.

He stressed that the AKPS intelligence and surveillance unit must continue to be strengthened to support operations.

“I have given full discretion to the director-general to carry out recruitment in line with AKPS’ functions,” he added.

Saifuddin said accurate intelligence is needed to ensure the success of operations.

AKPS was officially established on Jan 1, 2024, with 104 core positions at its headquarters.

The Cabinet approved the agency’s policy framework on Jan 3, 2024, marking a key step in strengthening its role.
