Merlimau Polytechnic ranks 199th globally in UI GreenMetric 2025

Merlimau Polytechnic in Melaka ranks 199th worldwide for campus sustainability, leading Malaysia’s TVET institutions in the UI GreenMetric ranking

JASIN: Merlimau Polytechnic (PMM) has achieved a historic global ranking of 199th out of 1,745 universities in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking 2025.

Director Norizam Sekak said the ranking evaluates higher education institutions on campus sustainability across several key areas.

The assessment covers infrastructure and environment, energy and climate change, waste management, water management, transportation, as well as education and research.

“This achievement strengthens PMM as the most sustainable Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution in Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

Norizam said the polytechnic’s improved performance since 2018 is driven by its SmartGreen PMM initiative, which is based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key factors include a campus Energy Management System and energy-saving initiatives of up to 20%.

The institution has also implemented an Energy Performance Contract (EPC) project to support more efficient energy use.

Other high-impact green projects include rainwater harvesting systems and the development of a campus lake as a biodiversity ecosystem.

The polytechnic has also developed energy-efficient housing and integrated campus waste management systems.

“This achievement directly benefits students by exposing them to real sustainability practices, which improves the employability of TVET graduates,” Norizam added.

For staff, the green campus creates a more comfortable working environment and supports professional development.

For the local community, PMM serves as a reference centre for sustainable practices through community engagement programmes.

Norizam said the achievement shows the polytechnic’s continuous efforts to promote sustainability in line with national goals.

PMM will strengthen this agenda through the SmartGreen PolyCC Blueprint 2025–2030.

The institution aims to enter the Top 100 worldwide in the UI GreenMetric ranking.

PMM is currently ranked 11th out of 91 higher education institutions in Malaysia.

It remains number one among 51 Polytechnic and Community College (PolyCC) institutions.
