Ministry to review Baba Nyonya, Chetti as national unity icons

The National Unity Ministry will review proposals to recognise the Baba Nyonya and Chetti communities as icons of national unity.

IPOH: The Ministry of National Unity will review proposals to recognise the Baba Nyonya and Chetti communities as icons of national unity.

Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the ministry is open to nominations of individuals or communities with potential to serve as such icons.

“We will look into this matter, and the ministry has a number of unity icons,” he said.

He noted that diver Pandelela Rinong from Sarawak is recognised as the top unity icon.

The ministry has also received many public proposals to recognise national leadership figures as unity icons.

Aaron was speaking at a ceremony for the 2026 Komuniti Rakyat MADANI Satellite Programme in Ipoh.

The proposal originated from Tangga Batu MP Bakri Jamaluddin during a recent Dewan Rakyat debate.

In a separate development, Aaron said the ministry will follow any government decision on the National Education Blueprint.

This includes the policy on admitting six-year-old children directly into Year One.

“All initiatives put forward are aimed at standardising the quality of education across the country,” he stated.

He described the education initiative as a positive step for national development.

There are nearly 30,000 kindergartens nationwide from various government and private institutions. – Bernama
