Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warns against complacency on smuggling and corruption, calling for immediate action to save the country’s potential.
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has declared that the government will no longer tolerate serious weaknesses in enforcement and governance.
He stressed that the country must be saved from activities damaging its integrity and economy.
“I have reached the point of losing patience and feel that there are still weaknesses and areas that must be improved,” Anwar said in a message to heads of departments and financial crime enforcement agencies.
The event was organised by the National Anti-Financial Crimes Centre.
Anwar stated that Malaysia possesses strong economic potential and human resources.
However, he said failures to tackle encroachment, smuggling and illegal activities are preventing the nation from achieving its true potential.
“Weaknesses cannot be left unattended, whether in terms of intrusion, smuggling, or tolerating illegal activities that still occur,” he added.
The Prime Minister noted these issues sometimes happen with the space and permission of enforcement agencies themselves.
He said the government no longer wants to be lulled by reports of success alone.
Instead, it demands firm action on integrity and enforcement problems.
“Let’s not take an indifferent, forgiving attitude and feel that this can happen continuously,” Anwar urged.
He called for immediate action from the moment of his speech.
Anwar also expressed regret over persistent enforcement weaknesses.
He acknowledged that many officers have shown excellent and meritorious service to the country.
“But the reality also forces us to reflect, to think seriously, do we want to carry out activities as usual, carelessly?” he asked.
The Prime Minister questioned if smuggling, corruption and illegal activities were acceptable.
He concluded that with various smuggling activities, the country can no longer continue on its current path.
