South Korea’s ambassador says Malaysia is a strategic gateway to ASEAN, citing its location, stability, and role in regional connectivity and supply chains.
SEOUL: South Korea regards Malaysia as a strategic gateway to the ASEAN region.
Ambassador Yeo Seung-bae said Malaysia’s central ASEAN role and location linking the Indian and Pacific Oceans make it a natural partner.
“As ASEAN consolidates its position as one of the world’s major economic blocs, Malaysia serves as an important entry point for Korea,” he stated.
He noted Malaysia’s geographical advantage, political stability, and commitment to ASEAN strengthen its standing as a hub.
Korea’s interest reflects global shifts as companies seek to diversify supply chains amid geopolitical uncertainty.
“ASEAN’s young population, expanding consumer market and abundant resources present significant opportunities,” Yeo added.
He said Malaysia is well positioned to connect Korean businesses with these regional strengths.
Beyond economics, he highlighted Malaysia’s active and balanced diplomacy as a key appeal.
Malaysia’s ability to maintain constructive relations with all major powers reinforces its credibility as a regional convenor.
Strengthening bilateral cooperation aligns with Korea’s strategy to anchor its presence in Southeast Asia through trusted partners.
As ASEAN’s relevance grows, Korea’s emphasis on Malaysia underscores a belief in engagement through connectivity and stability.
For Malaysia, being seen as a gateway reflects its aspiration to play a proactive regional role.
It leverages this position to attract investment and expand partnerships for long-term regional prosperity. – Bernama
