The tender for the RM15 million Melaka Sentral market project is expected to open next month, replacing the existing transit market in Bachang.
MELAKA: The tender for the construction of the Pasar Besar Melaka Sentral project at the old site beside the Melaka Sentral Terminal here is expected to open next month.
Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman (pic) said that so far, they are in the process of completing the tender documents for the construction of the ‘Serambi Melaka’ (veranda) concept market, which is valued at nearly RM15 million.
“The allocation for the construction of the large market has been approved by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), and the tender process will be opened next month.
“The Pasar Besar Melaka Sentral is expected to take one year and eight months to complete, involving the construction of a single-storey building to accommodate 330 traders and equipped with various basic facilities,” he said to reporters at the Pasar Wilayah Kota Laksamana here today.
He said this after the launch of the 2026 Clean Public Market Campaign, officiated by the Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong, who is also State Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Committee deputy chairman.
Shadan said that the Pasar Besar Melaka Sentral will replace the Pasar Besar MBMB in Bachang, which is currently a transit or temporary market, and all the traders will be relocated to the new market.
In another development, he said the upgrading work of the Pasar Wilayah Kota Laksamana was carried out through an allocation of nearly RM1 million received from the KPKT.
He said the work was carried out in two phases from last year to provide comfort to the 25 active traders in the market as well as to visitors.
Earlier, he said that the Clean Public Market Campaign was implemented to raise awareness among traders and visitors to consistently maintain cleanliness as a shared culture and practice in ensuring that the existing public markets are always clean and comfortable.
“This campaign is carried out continuously to curb the breeding of disease-carrying vectors such as flies, rats, and mosquitoes due to the unclean environment of public markets,” he added.
