Senior VAT 69 commando laid to rest with full police honours in Ipoh

Inspector Khairil Azhar Kamaruddin, who died in a Sabah diving training, was buried with full police honours in Ipoh after a sombre ceremony.

IPOH: A senior VAT 69 commando who died during a diving training exercise in Sabah has been laid to rest with full police honours.

Inspector Khairil Azhar Kamaruddin was buried at the Kariah Masjid Jamek Tanjung Rambutan Muslim Cemetery here at 6.10 pm.

The deceased, who was in his early 40s, lost consciousness during a diving exercise at Mataking Island, Semporna, yesterday.

He was administered first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation before being evacuated to Semporna Hospital.

His remains were flown from Tawau to the Air Operations Force Training Base in an RMAF C130 aircraft this afternoon.

A sombre atmosphere enveloped the General Operations Force Northern Brigade in Ulu Kinta as his body arrived for funeral prayers.

More than 500 family members, colleagues and police personnel attended the service at Masjid Saidina Abu Bakar As-Siddiq.

Internal Security and Public Order acting director Datuk Fisol Salleh and senior police officers were present to pay their last respects.

The burial ceremony was conducted in accordance with Royal Malaysia Police honours.

This recognised Khairil Azhar’s service and sacrifice for the nation.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said a detailed investigation will be conducted.

The probe will determine the cause, including an assessment of training procedures and equipment usage.

Health and safety factors will also be examined in accordance with established regulations. – Bernama
