Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warns against misuse of free speech to incite racial or religious hatred, especially during official foreign visits.
GOMBAK: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government will take the strongest action against any party threatening national security or inciting racial and religious tensions.
He stressed that freedom of expression must not be misused to incite hatred or disrupt public order, particularly while the country is hosting foreign dignitaries.
“If you want to voice your views or criticism, you may do so. This is a free country. But if you threaten national security or attempt to disrupt stability, particularly in the presence of foreign guests, believe me, we will take the strongest action,” he said at the Selangor PKR Convention 2026.
His warning comes as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins a two-day official visit to Malaysia.
Anwar, who is also PKR president, condemned attempts to project oneself as a ‘hero’ by exploiting sensitive issues, saying such actions undermine racial unity and national harmony.
He added that he issued a clear directive during a Cabinet meeting for the Home Minister and Inspector-General of Police to act decisively against any party attempting to usurp the role of the authorities.
The Prime Minister said the government’s responsibility is to ensure the safety of all citizens and reject attempts to inflame divisive sentiments.
“This is our country, with Malays, Chinese and Indians. We embrace everyone,” he said.
On the issue of houses of worship, Anwar said any objections should be raised through lawful channels like formal representations, not through provocation.
He also stressed he does not support the construction of houses of worship that do not comply with regulations, adding that all must adhere to laws and guidelines.
Earlier, police refused permission for a rally by the Gerakan Anti Rumah Anutan Haram (GARAH) group planned near the Sogo shopping complex.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the decision followed security intelligence assessments and feedback from relevant parties.
