PM Anwar welcomes Pakistan-Afghanistan ceasefire

PM Anwar Ibrahim welcomes the temporary Eid ceasefire and urges de-escalation for lasting peace between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed the temporary ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

He urged all parties to continue de-escalation efforts towards achieving lasting peace.

Anwar conveyed this message during a telephone conversation with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

He also extended Aidilfitri greetings and expressed commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

In a Facebook post, Anwar said Malaysia voiced concern over tensions in the Middle East involving Iran.

He stressed the urgent need to halt escalation and prioritise dialogue there.

Pakistan announced it had temporarily suspended military operations in Afghanistan.

The ceasefire was at the request of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkiye in conjunction with Aidilfitri.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the temporary ceasefire began at midnight on Wednesday.

It is scheduled to last until midnight on Monday.
