Op Selamat 26 will focus on 59 accident-prone locations nationwide, deploying over 5,500 personnel and emergency teams to ensure smooth traffic and reduce fatal crashes during the festive exodus.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police’s Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) will focus on 59 locations identified as prone to accidents and congestion nationwide under its Hari Raya Aidilfitri safety initiative, Op Selamat 26.
Bukit Aman JSPT director Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali said the six-day operation from March 19 to 24 aims to reduce accidents, ensure smooth traffic flow, and prevent crime.
An estimated 2.3 million vehicles are expected to use major highways during the festive travel period.
The operation adopts an early preventive service approach with comprehensive enforcement, involving coordination among all police contingents and cooperation with other agencies.
A total of 5,544 JSPT personnel will be deployed throughout the operation to strengthen enforcement and assist road users.
To enhance emergency response, 25 Emergency Response Teams will be stationed at 11 strategic locations along major highways including the North-South Expressway and East Coast routes.
These teams will be on standby to provide immediate assistance for vehicle breakdowns or other emergencies.
Strict action will be taken under the Road Transport Act 1987 against six major offences, Muhammed Hasbullah warned.
The offences are driving over the speed limit, using mobile phones while driving, misuse of emergency lanes, running red lights, overtaking on double lines, and queue cutting.
He also noted that the Ministry of Transport, through the Road Transport Department (JPJ), will enforce a ban on heavy vehicles on March 19, 20, 28, and 29 to reduce congestion.
JSPT is working with strategic partners including SOCSO and Kuala Lumpur City Hall to disseminate traffic information to the public.
Road users are advised to plan journeys early, obtain the latest traffic updates, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before travelling.
The public is also reminded to obey traffic rules, avoid driving under the influence, and remain patient and disciplined on the road.
“Members of the public are also reminded to take preventive measures to prevent crime before leaving their homes during the festive season,” Muhammed Hasbullah added.
