Ex-Sabah DAP Chief Frankie Poon and Liau Fui Fui join KDM, contesting Tanjong Papat and Elopura seats
PETALING JAYA: Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) has confirmed that Datuk Frankie Poon, the former Sabah DAP chairman, will contest and seek to retain the Tanjong Papat state seat under the KDM banner in the upcoming Sabah state election.
The announcement was made by KDM Deputy President Wetrom Bahanda during the launch of the party’s east coast zone election machinery at SMJK Tiong Hua in Sandakan according to Harian Metro.
Poon, who has served as the Tanjong Papat assemblyman for two terms and held a state ministerial post from 2018 to 2020, cited KDM’s status as a local party dedicated to Sabah’s interests as the reason for his switch.
Poon expressed his confidence in securing another term, believing his hard work and dedication to the constituency will resonate with voters despite his change in political affiliation.
He remarked that KDM provides the necessary “home” to truly serve the grassroots, noting, “From what I see, the party fights for the people and for Sabah’s future.”
Accompanying Poon in the move to KDM is former Sabah DAP secretary Liau Fui Fui, who resigned from the party last month.
Liau is slated to contest the Elopura state seat, marking a return to the campaign trail after losing the Batu Sapi parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election.
KDM deputy president Datuk Wetrom Bahanda also provided an update on the party’s election preparations, stating that KDM has so far confirmed candidates for 38 state seats, including Tanjong Papat and Elopura.
The party is currently finalising its decision on two additional east coast constituencies, with a further announcement expected on November 13.
Both Poon and Liau officially submitted their membership applications to KDM during the event, which was also attended by KDM acting president Priscella Peter and secretary-general Willie Jude Junaidi.
