GRS forms Sabah government with simple majority after state election

GRS and partner parties form Sabah government with simple majority as Hajiji Noor sworn in for second term as chief minister

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and its partner parties have formed the Sabah state government with a simple majority following the state election.

GRS deputy secretary-general Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali confirmed the coalition secured sufficient support from independent assemblymen to achieve the required majority.

“Insya-Allah, GRS, its partner parties and all independent assemblymen, who were previously with GRS either as assemblymen or party leaders before the dissolution, will move swiftly to fulfil the mandate and trust of the people of Sabah,” he stated in a Facebook post.

GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor was sworn in as chief minister for a second term in a ceremony at Istana Seri Kinabalu around 3 am.

Hajiji, who retained the Sulaman seat, took his oath of office before Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman.

The election results showed GRS winning 29 seats, Warisan securing 25, and Barisan Nasional obtaining six seats.

Independent candidates won five seats, while UPKO claimed three and STAR gained two seats.

Perikatan Nasional, Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat and Pakatan Harapan each secured one seat in the 73-seat state assembly.

A simple majority of 37 seats was required to form the state government. – Bernama
