PM term limit proposal hailed as progressive reform

Penang CM Chow Kon Yeow welcomes the 10-year cap on PM tenure as a step towards balanced governance, while Kedah MB Sanusi suggests performance should dictate length.

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposal to cap the Prime Minister’s tenure at ten years is seen as a progressive step for national governance.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the move reflects public aspiration for a balanced system free from power abuses.

“I hope this institutional reform will be translated into clear action and legislative amendment for the sake of our nation’s future,” he said in a statement.

He welcomed the government’s announcement that a related Bill will be tabled in Parliament this year.

The initiative is part of wider reforms to reinforce democratic norms and ensure transparent governance.

Chow noted this aligns with Penang being the first state to limit its Chief Minister to two terms in 2018.

Meanwhile, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor offered a contrasting view.

He said a Prime Minister performing well and benefiting the nation should face no issue with a longer tenure.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the term-limit Bill during an address in Putrajaya.

The proposed Bill is one of four new laws to be tabled as part of Parliament’s 2026 agenda.
