KUCHING: A total of 44 water and sewerage development projects worth nearly RM6 billion have been approved for Sarawak under the First Rolling Plan of the 13th Malaysia Plan next year.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that the projects comprise 11 new and 33 ongoing initiatives focusing on flood mitigation, river conservation, coastal erosion control, water supply and sewerage systems.

He announced that the government has allocated RM195.6 million for water and sewerage projects in the state for 2026, an increase of more than 53% compared with 2025.

Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said 27 projects worth RM172.4 million will be funded by the federal government.

He added that 17 other projects will be financed through loans amounting to RM23.24 million.

Under the National Flood Mitigation Plan, the government has allocated RM24.7 billion for flood control projects nationwide, including in Sarawak, to reduce flooding risks and impacts on local communities.

The government is also prioritising the implementation of the Non-Revenue Water Programme with an allocation of RM2.5 billion from 2025 to 2030 to replace critical pipelines and reduce water loss nationwide.

Fadillah highlighted that for Sarawak, initiatives such as upgrading the Nyabau Water Treatment Plant in Bintulu and constructing the Landeh WTP in Kuching are expected to enhance water supply efficiency and quality.

He said improving rural pipe distribution systems will also contribute to better water services for Sarawak’s communities.

These projects reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening water and sewerage infrastructure to ensure the continued well-being and safety of the people. – Bernama
