South China Sea code and AI Grok among key topics in Dewan Rakyat

Parliament to discuss South China Sea code of conduct, restrictions on AI Grok, and Year One entry age, alongside SEA Games success and MSME protection

KUALA LUMPUR: The Code of Conduct in the South China Sea and a temporary restriction on the Grok artificial intelligence platform are set for discussion in the Dewan Rakyat.

According to the Order Paper, Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) will ask the foreign minister for the latest developments in the COC negotiation process and Malaysia’s role in finalising it.

He will also inquire about the security situation in waters off Batu Puteh and the government’s measures to address it.

During the same session, Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat) will ask the communications minister about steps following the restriction of access to Grok AI in Malaysia.

His question will cover regulatory, enforcement, and monitoring aspects, plus long-term measures to protect vulnerable groups.

Roslan Hashim (PN-Kulim Bandar Baharu) will ask the education minister to explain the rationale for allowing students to enter Year One at age six.

He will also ask if empirical studies or impact assessments were conducted before the proposal was presented in Parliament.

In the oral question-and-answer session, Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (PH-Tebrau) will ask the youth and sports minister about the country’s achievements in the 2025 SEA Games.

He will inquire about plans to maintain and improve this performance, particularly in the effort to win Malaysia’s first Olympic gold medal.

Rodziah Ismail (PH-Ampang) will ask the domestic trade minister to state steps to control aggressive foreign food and beverage brands and e-commerce platforms.

She cited their competitive selling prices as a threat to the survival of local micro, small, and medium enterprises.

Following the oral Q&A, the Dewan Rakyat will proceed with the debate on the Motion of Thanks for the Royal Address.

This Dewan Rakyat sitting will last for 20 days until March 3, while the Senate will begin on Feb 23.
