‘Suspend him first’: MP urges Azam Baki to declare assets, step aside

Wong Chen calls on Azam Baki to declare assets and step aside as MACC chief amid probe

KUALA LUMPUR: Subang MP Wong Chen today called on Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki to publicly declare his assets and step aside while investigations proceed.

“Tell the public: declare your assets openly — your car, your house, what you own.

“We are not here to judge, but the important thing is that he has to leave. Suspend him first,” Wong said at the “Tangkap Azam Baki” rally in front of SOGO on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

The rally, the second since 2022 over Azam Baki’s shareholding and trading activities, was prompted by a series of Bloomberg reports last week alleging potential conflicts of interest involving the MACC chief.

Wong stressed that his criticism is directed at Azam Baki personally, not the MACC as an institution.

“I’m not against the MACC because at least 80% of its officers do their job. But we are against corruption within the MACC — the corporate mafia,” he said.

He also outlined key demands for any investigation committee, including suspending Azam Baki from office, ensuring an independent composition of members, and involving credible advisers such as Tengku Maimun, as he suggested yesterday.

“I want to see my government succeed. But to succeed, you must reform. This is the biggest test we face.

“If the government does not handle this matter properly, as a Member of Parliament, I will stand with you in holding the government to account,” Wong told the crowd.
