Penang’s Thaipusam celebration drives tourism and economic growth, with new India flight links and cultural unity under the Penang2030 vision.
GEORGE TOWN: The Thaipusam celebration in Penang significantly boosts the state’s tourism sector and local economy.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the festival benefits small traders, tourism operators, and local communities.
He stated that cultural and religious diversity strengthens unity and acts as a catalyst for socio-economic development.
The recent direct flight link between Chennai, India, and Penang is expected to further increase tourist arrivals.
“The Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple is the main focal point commemorating Lord Murugan’s victory over evil,” Chow said in his Thaipusam 2026 message.
He added that the festival’s values of devotion and self-discipline are worthy of emulation across all cultures.
Penang’s unique celebration occurs a day earlier as Chetti Pusam, featuring a procession by the Chettiar community.
Since 2017, the event has been enhanced with a golden chariot carrying the vel of Lord Murugan.
Chow also expressed commitment to developing Tamil National-Type Schools (SJKT) in the state.
He welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of a RM50 million allocation for SJKT maintenance nationwide.
The state government channelled RM2.42 million last year to upgrade school infrastructure and digital facilities.
This investment aims to create a safer and more conducive learning environment for STEM education.
Chow cited SJKT Ramakrishnan’s growth into a well-equipped building serving 339 students as an example.
He added that SJKT Rajaji in Air Itam will soon have an improved and more comfortable building.
The Chief Minister also thanked temple management, volunteers, and security agencies for ensuring smooth celebrations annually.
