Works Ministry mulls special accreditation for road contractors

The Works Ministry will consider special accreditation for contractors to improve road pavement quality and durability, ensuring longer service life.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Works Ministry is open to introducing special accreditation for contractors to enhance the quality and durability of road pavement works.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said the measure would ensure construction meets its intended service life. He stated that current projects by the Public Works Department are closely supervised by competent teams.

Appointed contractors are responsible for complying with all required quality standards. Ahmad noted that existing penalties for substandard work include bond forfeitures, payment deductions, and blacklisting from government tenders.

“However, the ministry has no objections and is ready to consider a proposal for special accreditation to ensure that pavement works are of better quality and more durable,” he said in Parliament.

He was responding to a query on adopting both accreditation and advanced technology to improve pavement lifespan and handle heavy traffic loads.
