Perak sees no durian glut as export demand remains high

Perak’s durian supply meets strong local and export demand, with FAMA shipping hundreds of tonnes to China, Hong Kong and Singapore.

IPOH: No durian glut has been reported in Perak due to consistently high demand from fans of the king of fruits.

State Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) director Azleena Zainal Abidin said production of both kampung and clone durian aligns with local and export market needs.

“In Perak, we always receive high demand for durian supplies to be exported to China, Hong Kong and Singapore,” she said.

She added that FAMA exports about 100 to 200 metric tonnes per shipment to those countries.

Last year, FAMA received over 500 tonnes from durian farmers for marketing domestically and abroad.

Azleena identified Batu Kurau, Kampung Gajah and Tapah as the state’s three largest durian production locations.

She spoke after the Eat More Local Fruits and Durian Promotion Campaign Programme officiated by state committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun.

Mohd Zolkafly said the campaign reflects the state government’s concern for farmer welfare and consumer well-being.

“The implementation of this initiative aims to assess the actual situation at the farm level, stabilise prices and boost demand for local durian,” he stated.

He announced that Perak FAMA will continue purchasing durian as long as supply is available.

The purchased products will be marketed through wholesale, retail channels and direct sales by the FAMA Operations Centre.

Mohd Zolkafly added the campaign aligns with FAMA’s objectives to strengthen the durian commodity marketing chain.
