Malaysian Prisons Department will fully cooperate with police investigations into Suaram’s allegations of inmate death and mistreatment.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Prisons Department will fully cooperate with the police (PDRM) in investigations into allegations by Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) concerning the death of a detainee and alleged mistreatment of another at prison facilities.
In a statement today, the department said the cooperation would ensure all relevant facts are obtained comprehensively, transparently and in accordance with the law.
“The department respects the ongoing legal process and will await the outcome of the police investigation before issuing any further statement on the matter,” it said.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all inmates are treated in accordance with legal provisions, regulations, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and good governance principles.
SUARAM had earlier claimed that it had not received a response from the Prisons Department over the death of an inmate at Temiang Prison, Negeri Sembilan, on June 22, and the alleged mistreatment of another inmate by prison guards at Simpang Renggam Prison, Johor, on June 4.
