Over 5 tonnes of waste collected and 1,000 mangroves planted during SMG Mega Mangrove Cleanup in Port Klang.
PORT KLANG: More than five tonnes of waste were collected and 1,000 mangrove saplings planted during the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) Mega Mangrove Cleanup 2026 at Mangrove Point, Raja Lumu Permanent Forest Reserve here today.
Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB) Managing Director Syaiful Azmen Nordin said volunteers collected 5,350 kilogrammes of waste during the programme, reinforcing ongoing efforts to restore the Klang River ecosystem and conserve the state’s mangrove forests. He said LLSB had removed a total of 45,877kg of waste through 60 cleanup programmes conducted under the SMG initiative between 2023 and January 2026.
“The waste collected included plastic bottles, plastic bags, glass bottles, aluminium cans and styrofoam containers. These were not newly discarded items but old waste, most of which had flowed from upstream of the Klang River and became trapped when the tide receded,” he told reporters after the programme.
The programme was officiated by Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Tengku Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and witnessed by Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim. More than 1,600 participants joined, earning a Malaysia Book of Records recognition for the “Largest Participation in a Single Mangrove Forest Cleanup Programme”.
Syaiful Azmen said the programme, themed “Restoring Ecosystems, Renewing Futures”, was the first large-scale mangrove conservation initiative of its kind, highlighting the importance of strategic collaboration between the public and private sectors. Held in conjunction with World Mangrove Day and the Selangor-level International Day of Forests, it was organised with the Selangor Forestry Department and the Royal City Council of Klang.
“This achievement shows that restoring ecosystems is not only a responsibility but also an opportunity to unite communities towards a shared vision of restoring the environment and building a more sustainable future,” he said. The programme complemented LLSB’s continuous SMG efforts on ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation in line with the Klang River rehabilitation.
Syaiful Azmen said as SMG’s master developer, LLSB is committed to creating sustainable value for Selangor by restoring river ecosystems while opening up economic opportunities for future generations.
Izham said restoring the Klang River required a holistic approach beyond physical infrastructure. “The Klang River restoration undertaken through SMG is an important step towards restoring the river’s ecosystem health. However, river rehabilitation alone is not enough.” He said programmes such as the mega cleanup formed part of the state’s broader environmental, social and governance agenda, as successful conservation required close cooperation among government, private sector, communities and other stakeholders.
The event also marked the official launch of LLSB’s new corporate identity, symbolising its transformation into a purpose-driven organisation anchored on sustainability and ESG principles.
