Trump says US law blocks bid for 3rd presidential term

President Donald Trump acknowledges the 22nd Amendment bars him from a third term, closing the door on a 2028 run despite earlier speculation.

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has publicly acknowledged that the United States Constitution prevents him from seeking a third term in office.

He stated that the 22nd Amendment clearly prohibits his candidacy after his current term concludes in January 2029.

“If you read it, it’s pretty clear — I’m not allowed to run. It’s too bad,” Trump told reporters while travelling on Air Force One.

This statement signals a shift from his previous remarks where he had not definitively ruled out another presidential bid.

The constitutional amendment bars any individual from being elected to the presidency more than twice.

Trump had publicly entertained the idea of a third term since winning his second election in November.

House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed he discussed the matter with the president and concluded a constitutional amendment was not viable.

“It’s been a great run,” Johnson said, characterising their conversation about the constitutional restrictions.

He noted that the amendment process requires a two-thirds congressional majority and ratification by three-fourths of states.

Johnson estimated this lengthy process could take up to a decade to complete successfully.

“I don’t see the path for that,” he added, dismissing the possibility of a timely amendment.

Some Trump allies, including former strategist Steve Bannon, have promoted legal theories challenging the two-term limit.

Trump himself has referenced the idea at political rallies and sells “Trump 2028” merchandise.

Johnson described this activity as political theatre designed to provoke reactions from opponents.

“He has a good time with that, trolling the Democrats whose hair is on fire about the very prospect,” Johnson said.

The president also identified Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential 2028 Republican candidates.

If Trump were to run again, he would be 82 years old at the time of the next election.

This would make him the oldest president in United States history. – Reuters
