Two 19-year-old teacher trainees from IPG drowned in Setiu after one fell into river and the other attempted rescue in swirling waters

SETIU: Two trainee teachers drowned in Sungai Dusun Warisan near Kampung Basong while on an outing with fellow students.

The victims were identified as Muhammad Hazmi Othman from Sungai Petani, Kedah and Adam Arief Jazlansanadi from Kuala Lumpur, both aged 19.

Setiu police chief Supt Mohd Zain Mat Dris said the incident occurred around 11.15 am on Thursday.

Adam Arief reportedly slipped from a rock into the river and attempted to cling to a friend for support.

Muhammad Hazmi immediately jumped into the water to rescue his struggling friend.

“Both victims drowned due to the swirling river currents,” Mohd Zain stated in a press release.

Villagers discovered Muhammad Hazmi’s body first at 12.05 pm, followed by Adam Arief’s remains 50 minutes later.

The bodies were transported to Setiu Hospital Forensic Unit for post-mortem examinations.

The two victims were among 24 Teacher Education Institute students visiting the river for recreational activities.

Police investigations found no criminal elements involved in the tragic incident.
