Singapore executes Malaysian man for drug trafficking

Singapore has carried out the death penalty on a Malaysian national convicted of trafficking over 52 grammes of heroin, following the dismissal of multiple appeals

SINGAPORE: A Malaysian man convicted of drug trafficking has been executed in Singapore.

The Central Narcotics Bureau confirmed that the capital sentence against Lingkesvaran Rajendaren was carried out.

The 33-year-old was accorded full due process under the law and was represented by legal counsel throughout his trial and appeal.

He was convicted in 2018 for trafficking not less than 52.77 grammes of diamorphine, or pure heroin.

His appeal was dismissed by the Court of Appeal in March 2019. Following this dismissal, Lingkesvaran was involved in eight post-appeal applications, all of which were dismissed or resolved.

His petitions to the President for clemency were also unsuccessful. Just days before the execution, his counsel filed a civil suit alleging wrongful acts by public officers within the Singapore Prison Service.

An application for a stay of execution pending this civil suit was rejected by the Court of Appeal. The sentence was then carried out.
